One of the things I’ve been trying to absorb and graft onto my writing DNA over the last 3-4 years has been to develop a daily writing habit. For the most part, it’s been pretty successful. On most days I write at least something, even if it’s a meandering rant on what’s bothering me about life scrawled into my journal.
However, what about the idea of sharing something on a regular basis?
Being a writer these days is an interesting deal. With social media burrowing into EVERYTHING like some meth-addled tapeworm, there’s a lot of pressure to produce and share. Which is an odd thing for folks like myself who specialize in words on a page rather than curating cat photos or family recipes.
Like… I’m supposed to give all that stuff away for free?
After some careful consideration (and a glance at my sales numbers), the answer is… yeah. And why not? If my goal is to have as many people as possible read (and hopefully enjoy) my poetry, then what’s to be worried about? While it’d be nice to support my family off book sales, let’s just say I’m not holding my breath.
So, for the last year or so, I’ve been posting poems on Instagram. Because nothing says “excitement” like static words on a platform that’s leaning more and more into video, right?
At first, I was posting every day until that became somewhat unsustainable. After that, I’ve been playing with some different ideas until arriving at my current schedule – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It’d be nice if I had some sort of statistical information to show how this is the optimal amount of posts and how I time them specifically according to audience activity, but… it’s really just what works for me and they go out kinda when they go out.
At any rate, if you follow me on Instagram or over on Facebook, you’ll get a little tidbit of poetry in your feed every couple of days. If you like it, feel free to… um… like it. And possibly share with some friends.
